The Pennsylvania State University, founded as an agricultural college in 1855, is located in the fertile Nittany Valley of central Pennsylvania. The school, established to teach methods of soil conservation, became Pennsylvania State College in 1874. A community slowly grew up around the school, and it was incorporated as the Borough of State College in 1896. Today Penn State University offers undergraduate degrees in more than 160 programs and some 160 graduate degree programs.
